Can our footstep generate energy?

A floor tile has been designed in the UK. That product is called Pavegen and it converts kinetic energy in electric energy from pedestrians’ footsteps. Energy is stored in a battery and used for various low power applications although its aim usually is to obtain enough energy to light lamps and traffic lights.

In some cases the 5% of the electricity is used to light a central lamp in order to increase the citizens’ participation. The ideal sites are busy streets, transport hubs, events and shopping centres.

The product is waterproof and can be used efficiently outdoor and indoor. The surface of the slab is made from 100% recycled rubber from car tyres and the base of the floor tile is constructed from over 80% recycled materials.
